How Does God See You?

Man at the CrossWhat does God see when He looks at you? The Scriptures give us a very clear view of how God sees us. He made us in His image to be His children and members of His family. The Bible calls us not only servants and heirs of God, but also friends. We are loved by God, not because of what we do, but because of who He created us to be. Nothing we can do will turn His love from us.

God loves us so much that He declared how valuable we are to the whole universe by giving us Jesus as a sacrifice. He cares for us and made every provision necessary for us to make an intimate relationship with Him possible. Not only did He die for us, but He gave His angels charge over us to protect, minister, and guard us. He left us with His authority and power so that anything that we put our hand to, can be accomplished through Him. God trust us so much that He left His ministry of reconciliation on earth for us to complete. He has confidence in us to minister in His name and with His authority.

God sees us as loveable, valuable, and competent.

Here are just a few verses that show us what God thinks of us:

“Let us make man in our image…” Genesis 1:26 NIV

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” John 1:12-13 NIV

“You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:5 NIV

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15 NIV

“Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” Hebrews1:14 NIV

“…you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.” 1 Peter 1:18-19 NIV

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;” Psalm 91:11 NIV

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7 NIV

“We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” 2 Corinthians 5:20 NIV

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13 NKJV

God sees us as extremely valuable, loveable, and competent. The question is, do we believe Him? If we have not experienced light and truth in our families of origin, our communities, and our peer groups, ourselves image has been distorted. A faulty identity can imprison us in depression, self-condemnation, despair and all forms of self-defeating behaviors. Believers who have not had their needs meet in the above three areas, cannot see themselves as God’s beloved, valued, and competent child.

People with confused identities see themselves as victims in a hostile world and endure what comes their way instead of challenging it or attempting to change it. Instead, they embrace it as what they deserve and support the belief in their mind, choices, and behaviors. In contrast, a person who embraces God’s declaration of them being loveable, valuable, and competent, feel equipped by God to face any challenge. They believe God is on their side and has a plan for their life.

God wants to draw close to those of us with wounded identities and then He begins rebuilding us. We are encouraged to have an intimate and progressing relationship with Christ, His Word, and other believers. Then, God’s light and truth begins to flood in, and we are changed because our spiritual, emotional, and relational needs are met. We then can begin to see ourselves more clearly.
